As you probably have figured out by now, Thailand is under martial law and, as such, the military leaders have banned public gatherings, invalidated the constitution (which, hey, isn’t that bad – as it was only 9 years old anyways), and banned opinion pieces from being broadcast on TV news or in the papers.
And yet, despite all that, things are pretty calm. There’s no looting or public disorder. No police in riot gear or soldiers tossing tear gas canisters. It’s all very, well… peaceful.
Considering that Thai people are pretty laid back anyways, I’d say that some of this is a reflection on the culture, some of it is due to the people’s respect of the King (who apparently has endorsed the coup), and some is just because people are often more interested in watching Click at the local cinema than getting stressed over politics.
All that is to say that if you ever visit a country in the middle of a coup, we heartily recommend Thailand.
